- Rememberance Day 2023 | Abbey Park Nottm
We feel it's important to remember those people and all the animals that fought for us in past conflicts. This page marks those memories and brave souls. Home Remembrance Day 2023 Over the past few weeks and months members of our community have dedicated their time creating the most spectacular displays for our community in commemoration of those who lost their lives during the war and those who continue to serve and give their lives so that we may live in peace. Just over two years ago, a small crafting/crocheting group was formed by Catherine Bailey, Karen Dee Holmes and Wendy Roddy, the then Manageress of the Willow Tree Pub on Rufford Way, called 'Stitch Up', it soon grew into a regular Tuesday evening event at The Willow Tree where it has continued to grow in popularity. They decided to commemorate Remembrance Sunday by creating a display along with Tracey & John Turrill, who undertook a further display at the Notice Board based on the corner of Rufford Way & Buckfast Way. In the following photographs, you can see one of those displays Please take time to enjoy the following photographs and appreciate all the hard work done to make our community a better place to live. Our thanks go to : John & Tracey Turrill for their fabulous Notice Board display. Sue & Lol Andrews for helping with displays. Abbey Park Stitch Up Group for their valiant efforts in creating their display at The Willow Tree Pub: Joanne Whittingham, Lisa Godden, Julie Salisbury, Ruth Kerry, Catherine Bailey, Karen Dee Holme , Theona Yates, Christine and Debs Machin-Smith and finally Ben Wheatley, the current Manager of the Willow Tree for allowing us to continue to display our creations. - Tree Planting for Future Generations | Abbey Park Nottm
We want our field to grow and become an even more beautiful place to be. Tree Planting Streetwise have now started planting to replace the beautiful Ash Trees that were damaged by dieback. New Acers, Cherries and Red Oak are being planted and will be hopefully gracing our park in years to come. Thankfully, Streetwise has a contractor to water them every 3 weeks from March. However it should ideally be once a week. If you can help in any way to ensure they settle in and become well established, please email us at abbeypark.ng@gmail.com More discussions are underway with a view to planting a possible orchard and even a mini forest so watch this space!

- Abbey Circus Air Raid Shelter | Abbey Park Nottm
Abbey Circus Air Raid Shelter Walk to Abbey Circus to view the triangle of land which was left to the local residents to enjoy and you will find more than just a grass. For many years the patch of land was off limits until local residents fought for it to be reopened. Today there are access gates, new fencing, planters and, importantly, you will find its WW2 air raid shelter, which is still in existence today. It was earmarked for demolition in 1979, the Cold War drew to a close and the 67 ft shelter (B34TYB) was mothballed but recently has been protected and is now considered to be a site of Special Scientific Interest. A couple of years ago, Chris Reynolds, Professor of Contemporary European History and Memory Studies at Nottingham Trent University took on the project to restore and reopen the shelter. Thanks to him school children now visit to learn about the war effort and the fascinating local history. The general public are also able to visit. Please go to https://ng2shelter.com/about/ to find out more. For more information or to book: Email: information@ng2shelter.com Below you can see a selection of artefacts from inside the shelter.
