Abbey Circus Air Raid Shelter

Walk to Abbey Circus to view the triangle of land which was left to the local residents to enjoy and you will find more than just a grass. For many years the patch of land was off limits until local residents fought for it to be reopened. Today there are access gates, new fencing, planters and, importantly, you will find its WW2 air raid shelter, which is still in existence today.

It was earmarked for demolition in 1979, the Cold War drew to a close and the 67 ft shelter (B34TYB) was mothballed but recently has been protected and is now considered to be a site of Special Scientific Interest.

A couple of years ago,  Chris Reynolds, Professor of Contemporary European History and Memory Studies at Nottingham Trent University took on the project to restore and reopen the shelter. Thanks to him school children now visit to learn about the war effort and the fascinating local history. The general public are also able to visit.
