Sadly, this year saw the demolition of one of the oldest buildings in West Bridgford. Our very own Abbey Road Pumping Station , to make way for much needed new housing. Incredibly, the plans of the pumping station were found in a skip! The drawings, which date from 1901, revealed the station at the Abbey Road depot was built in 1886 and it is hoped that they will be sent to the County Archives for safe storage as they show how West Bridgford has developed over time, having housed a pumping station, a bus depot, a council refuse depot and even a mortuary! The depot site actually featured a number of other historic structures that were built slightly after 1900/1901. The whole development was built to treat the refuse of Bridgford which included a destructor, that burnt solid waste. The clinker from that was then used under the roads of West Bridgford. There were stables and cart sheds, cottages for on-site staff and offices, and the site dealt with the waste and refuse of the people and businesses of Bridgford. Abbey Park Residents Association’s - Simon Middlecote, liaised with Rushcliffe Borough Councillors in the hope that the pumping station could at least be saved and repurposed as a community hub, but unfortunately, this was not to be. We wanted to embrace our park further so have introduced wildflower areas. These will develop further each year. See how we started it all off. Abbey Park's Wildflower Area has begun! Some time ago, local resident Wendy King started looking into Abbey Park having a wild flower area. After consultations she was given the go ahead and is now co ordinating the volunteers. The plan is to have two separate areas (see map below) which will encourage insects as well as bringing further beauty to the park. Wendy King has been supported by Sue Andrew and Penny Gowland and the seeds were given to us by Rushcliffe Biodiversity team as part of this project. Below are some of the seeds that will be planted A great mix of grasses and mostly perennial wildflowers, many rich in both nectar and pollen and known to be especially attractive to honey bees. By growing these species you are helping to support these important pollinators. By planting seeds that encourage pollinators such as bees and other insects to your garden, you can gain a tiny gardening A-team to do your pest control and pollination, all with the added benefit of supporting British native wildlife by providing habits and food sources. Shown here preparing area 2, she's done a fabulous job and even worked through some showers, finishing a patch approximately 4 meters square! Our thanks go to everyone involved in this wonderful work. Abbey Park members are planting the seeds in readiness for planting out when the areas are cleared. 26th May update Work started today on the upper patch of Wildflower meadow area with huge thanks to James Hounslow and the company he works for as they allowed him the use of a turf stripper! The photos here show the exact area being worked upon and some of the rolls already created by John Bailey. I think you'll agree, they've done a fabulous job so far and we think it will be fabulous when completed ☺️ The picture below show some the larger area where the turf needs to be laid (upturned) to kill off the existing turf and make ready for the second, much larger wildlife area. Autumn 2021 Update The photograph above shows some of the planting done earlier this year. The photo to the left gives an update to the wildflower planting areas. From the left - this was partially planted this year. yellow dots indicated space for seeds. The extension. Tom Pettit (from the council) has agreed to leave and will make a curve around the lower trees so the plan is to seed from that to cover whole area. The second area is near the play area - seed within area in and around the trees.They will be cutting an oval around the trees. Area three was partially planted/seeded this year. The intention is to seed the whole of the previously implanted area and give light seeding around area that was planted.

We love to celebrate together, s we thought a community gathering would be just the thing. A great day was had by all and we look forward to our next one. Community Gathering September 11th 2022 Wow Abbey Park. What a fantastic afternoon. A massive thank for making the first ever Abbey Park Summer Gathering such a great success. Great to see people of all ages enjoying the stalls and activities. So many people from our wonderful community. A massive thank you to all on the community association committee and everyone else who helped organise the event as well as councillor Penny Gowland for attending today. We are SO incredibly lucky to have been gifted a sapling taken directly from The famous Major Oak. It's now planted and growing nicely on out lovely park. Abbey Parks very own Major Oak Sapling The ceremony to mark the planting of the Major Oak sapling on Abbey Park and to formally ‘welcome’ the fruit trees planted last winter was held 23rd February 2022. Where the Major of Rushcliffe, local schoolchildren and other Abbey Park residents were at the planting. Izi Banton, Estates and Conservation Manager for RSPB Sherwood Forest said: “There are Major Oak saplings which have been planted in locations right around the world, so we know that its offspring will be growing and generating their own acorns and saplings for centuries to come and I am delighted that we have been able to donate this one to a community in our own county, to stand alongside other. Nottinghamshire species which have been so carefully selected for Abbey Park.” The sapling will be a significant addition to the recent planting on Abbey Park. Pupils from Edmund Campion Primary School will be involved in the planting of the Oak, and in the care of the fruit trees, and so encouraged to learn about their positive environmental impact and their Nottinghamshire history. Surrounded by stakes and wire to protect it, it will be nursed along with several other fruit trees, by the children of St Edmund Campion School who have kindly agreed to adopt them. We hope to bring you photographs of them if and when permission is gained, but for now please enjoy some photos of the day and the tree planting.
