The Haunting at Hill House

Alone in the world, Eleanor is delighted to take up Dr Montague's invitation to spend a summer in the mysterious Hill House. Joining them are Theodora, an artistic 'sensitive', and Luke, heir to the house. But what begins as a light-hearted experiment is swiftly proven to be a trip into their darkest nightmares, and an investigation that one of their number may not survive. Twice filmed as The Haunting, and the inspiration for a 10-part Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House is a powerful work of slow-burning psychological horror.

Haunting of Hill House, a well-known classic horror story. The novel describes the journey of 3 individuals, gathered by an investigative academic to document the haunting of a house with a tragic past . The slow burning foreboding is subtlety scary rather than graphic , and the gradual spiralling psychological breakdown of the fragile Eleanor seems inevitable .To my mind, not as chilling and petrifying as the excellent Woman in Black (Susan Hill ) , but a reasonable example of this genre .Will try to see the 1960 film Caroline 7/10

Hill House is a dark house with a dark past. Four investigators go to explore the house; ghost expert Dr. Montague has drawn together a team to investigate.
The book explores the supernatural and the power of suggestibility. Atmospheric and confusing at times. The motives of the shy main character Eleanor are unclear and if you are looking for a clear resolution at the end, you will be disappointed. A classic of its time, but maybe not for modern horror lovers. Linda. 5/10

This one wasn't for me, I didn't understand what was going on and failed to follow a plot. That said, I enjoyed the discussion with the group and appreciated the variety of views on it. 2/10
